Green bean breeding research has been going on at OSU for several decades. Green beans for processing are now grown profitably on 18,000-19,000 Oregon acres. Current work includes breeding white mold-resistant cultivars, developing cultivars with an erect bush growth habit, improving traits associated with processing quality, and breeding for smaller sieve size cultivars. These higher yielding, better quality cultivars are increasing Oregon growers' net returns.
